The News Of Your World
The News Of Your World is a pastiche on the television news network Euronews. After carefully reviewing several channels (CNN/ BBC World/ Euronews) it seemed to me that Euronews is completely lacking human input. It is news broadcasted from a database, where items are tagged and cut to a precise length fitting the various subject-blocks (e.g. 'foreign' 'european' 'business' 'sports' etc.). Text and images appear pasted together only by reference of the tags given. It is news new media style. Following this principle it would not at all be unlikely to have the same images illustrating different news items.

Based on these thoughts The News Of Your World was constructed. Over and over again the same visuals were used. Not only the supporting nondescript footage (a generic rumble when the subject is terrorism, some traffic jam when it concerns a big city) but the so-called infographics as well are used on a basis of interchangeability. All is being reused and recycled and therefore the whole information output becomes standardised and as news, unreliable.

With The News Of Your World I sought ways to express the discomfort I experience when watching the news on a regular basis. Somehow it appears normal to be shown an image of a woman wearing a headscarf to illustrate domestic violence. To me this seems misplaced symbolism. We are being manipulated in an almost subliminal manner. Here, objectiveness in journalism has proven an utopia and the responsibility of cerebrating and integrity is increasingly left to the consumers.
